How was The Private Postman founded?

In 2009 our founder and MD Mark Redmond was fired from Royal Mail after falling out with a disgruntled manager. As a result Mark decided to go to court and won his unfair dismissal case. During the process he however had to keep a roof over his head and as such he decided to go to work in a few leaflet distribution companies that operated in London at that point.

Very quickly he grew quite frustrated with the archaic systems in place in these companies. The lack of organisation, leadership, quality-checks and overall approach to the business was not what he was expecting. He knew that you never see two postmen on a single street for a reason. Because it is highly inefficient.

After seeing a need in the market for a professional, well-organised leaflet distribution company backed by  years of experience he decided to start The Private Postman. Putting into work the ten years he spent working as a postman he knew that there was a better way to run a business in this space.

The first two steps that Mark made were approaching some of his posting buddies and acquiring a state-of-the-art GPS system. The quality of distribution and strong, experience workforce were the fundamentals the company was built on and nothing has changed in this regard since. The Private Postman is the first leaflet distribution company in the UK to introduce a GPS system tracking the movement of all distributors and transparently sharing this data with all clients. This was crucial to winning the first piece of business he acquired for the company. That was a good £1500 distribution job with Winkworth’s Estate Agent in Willesden Green. They were impressed but the GPS system and the business of leaflet distribution in London has changed forever. Gone were the trust issues many companies understandably had when handing over tens of thousands of leaflets to distributors who had no way of confirming that all deliveries were made correctly. Mark understood that clients are not only investing the price of distribution. They also have to pay a graphic designer to come up with the look of the leaflets, print the physical leaflets and transport them. These costs add up and when working in larger quantities these costs are not only not negligible they are huge.

In the first year The Private Postman generated £60,000 in turnover. Ten years later Mark’s company has over 50 Private Postmen and Women all over London delivering over two million leaflets a month. Our clients range from local hairdressers to Harrods, the NHS and multi-national restaurant chains.

Over the years all the systems that have been in place since the start of the company have been refined and battle tested. We now have a live system informing our clients of each delivery as it is taking place, we have the best workforce in the industry and the best pay too. We also work very closely with our partners in supporting their digital marketing efforts with physical leaflets being delivered in tandem with social media and google ads. This has been possibly the most effective way of implementing leaflet distribution yet and as per usual The Private Postman is leading the way in this approach.
